Little Men is a little movie brimming with big truths about modern life…. Thirteen-year-old Jake is a quiet, sensitive middle schooler with dreams of being an artist. When his grandfather dies, his family moves from Manhattan back into his father’s old Brooklyn home. There, Jake befriends the charismatic Tony, whose single mother Leonor, a dressmaker from Chile, runs the shop downstairs. Their budding friendship is put at risk, however, when a rent dispute between Jake’s father, Brian (Greg Kinnear), and Tony’s mother, Leonor  threatens to become contentious. Written and directed by Ira Sachs.

85 min / in English and in Spanish with subtitles

Luminous characterizations and big-hearted filmmaking. -Vulture

Little Men is a testament to Sachs’s sublime powers of observation, transforming the smallest blip on life’s radar, a childhood friendship, into a momentous occasion—the birth of the creative mind, the bloom of adolescence, the bearing of adulthood’s worst burdens. This is a film as fleeting as a summer afternoon, and as pregnant with possibilities. – Slant
