In this penetrating dissection of modern China from storyteller extraordinaire Jia Zhang-ke (A Touch of Sin), a young woman must choose between a wealthy capitalist and a coal miner. Mountains May Depart begins in Fenyang in 1999 as a stylized romantic melodrama and, adopting elements of fantasy, ends in Australia in 2025.
(The movie’s Chinese title translates as Mountains, Rivers, Old Friends.)
