SUMMARY:La Sapienza
DESCRIPTION:July 3\, 5\, 10\, 11 ♦ Scroll down for Times and locations \nA disillusioned French architect travels to Italy searching for inspiration. La Sapienza is an inspiring love story set amid sun-drenched Italian vistas and soul-stirring architectural wonders. It follows the intersecting fates of four present-day characters transformed by the work of two 17th-century artistic giants: the Swiss-Italian architect Francesco Borromini and the French playwright Moliere.  And it tackles the Big Questions: where\, in the 21st-century\, are the sources of enlightenment and wisdom? The title of the film refers to one of the most venerable projects designed by Borromini: the Church of St. Yves at La Sapienza in Rome.\n \nFilmmaker Eugène Green\, a native New Yorker\, has lived in Paris since the 1970s and  founded a theater company dedicated to the revival of Baroque theater. Since 2001\, he has made five features; La Sapienza\, the latest\, is the first to receive American distribution. (France/Italy; 104 min)\n \n\n \n♦ La Sapienza strikes this reviewer as easily the most astonishing and important movie to emerge from France in quite some time. While its style deserves to be called stunningly original and rapturously beautiful\, the film is boldest in its artistic and philosophical implications\, which pointedly go against many dominant trends of the last half-century.\n\n– Godfrey Cheshire\, ROGEREBERT.COM\n \n♦ American audiences will discover one of the most original voices in French cinema in full\, beguiling bloom.\n–Variety\n \n \nWATCH THE TRAILER \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nFri\, July 3\n \nLa Sapienza 7:00 @ IU Fine Arts \nThe Wolfpack  7:45 @ IU Woodburn \n  \nSun\, July 5\n \nLa Sapienza 5:30 @ Bear’s Place\n \nThe Wolfpack  7:45 @ Bear’s Place – Last Chance! \n  \nFri\, July 10\n \nIn the Name of My Daughter 7:00 @ IU Fine Arts \nLa Sapienza  7:45 @ IU Woodburn \n  \nSat\, July 11\n \nIn the Name of My Daughter 7:00 @ IU Fine Arts \nLa Sapienza  7:45 @ IU Woodburn \n  \nSun\, July 12\n \nLa Sapienza 5:30 @ Bear’s Place \nIn the Name of My Daughter 7:45 @ Bear’s Place

SUMMARY:The Kidnapping of Michel Houellebecq
DESCRIPTION:June 12\, 13\, 14\, 19\, 20\, 21\, 26\, 27\, 28 ♦ Scroll down for Times and locations \n  \nMichel Houellebecq\, possibly the most widely read living French writer\, was believed kidnapped on September 16\, 2011. But was he really? After a flurry of media reports of his abduction\, the story goes cold and Houellebecq\, famously reclusive\, refuses to set the record straight. Now he goes one step further by starring as himself in a film that purports to tell the tale.  With a nod to O. Henry’s short story\, The Ransom of Red Chief\, the film explores the dramatic territory where the personae of criminal and victim are remade in unexpected and surprisingly amusing ways. (France; 96 min)\n \nCoincidentally\, a caricature of Michel Houellebecq was on the cover of the magazine Charlie Hebdo on Jan. 7\, the day that two jihadists entered its Paris offices and killed 12 people.\n♦ “A divertingly eccentric\, often comically absurd movie about a novelist … who finds something like happiness after being abducted.” \n– Manohla Dargis\, NEW YORK TIMES \n  \n♦ “A French intellectual’s equivalent of Michael Winterbottom’s TRIP movies\, by way of Michael Bay’s PAIN & GAIN.” \n– Scott Foundas\, VARIETY \n  \n♦ “The Houellebecq we see on screen is obviously rooted as much in fiction as in fact\, yet what makes his performance so fascinating is the mischievous glee he takes in sending up his own persona.” \n– Melissa Anderson\, VILLAGE VOICE \n  \n♦ “An inspired comic thriller…will reward curious viewers with its understated humor and unexpected warmth.” \n– Stephen Dalton\, HOLLYWOOD REPORTER \n  \n♦ “This quietly uproarious drama delivers substantial artistic whimsy with a poker face.”  \n– Richard Brody\, THE NEW YORKER \n  \nWATCH THE TRAILER \n  \n  \n  \nFri\, June 26\n \nLa Sapienza 7:00 @ IU Fine Arts \nThe Kidnapping of Michel Houellebecq  7:45 @ IU Woodburn \nThe Wolfpack 8:50 @ IU Fine Arts \n  \nSat\, June 27\n \nLa Sapienza 7:00 @ IU Fine Arts \nThe Kidnapping of Michel Houellebecq  7:45 @ IU Woodburn \nThe Wolfpack 8:50 @ IU Fine Arts \n  \nSun\, June 28 \nThe Kidnapping of Michel Houellebecq  5:30 @ Bear’s Place \nLa Sapienza 7:45 @ Bear’s Place \n  \nFri\, July 3\n \nLa Sapienza 7:00 @ IU Fine Arts \nThe Wolfpack  7:45 @ IU Woodburn \n  \nSun\, July 5\n \nLa Sapienza 5:30 @ Bear’s Place\n \nThe Wolfpack  7:45 @ Bear’s Place – Last Chance! \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:June 12\, 13\, 14\, 19\, 20 ♦ Scroll down for Times and locations \n  \nPowered by the antics of a mischievous centenarian on the run\, blockbuster comedy The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed out the Window and Disappeared abounds with irreverent charm.  After a long and colorful life working in munitions and getting entangled in the Spanish Civil War\, the Manhattan Project\, and other definitive events of the 20th century\, Allan Karlsson finds himself stuck in a nursing home.  Determined to escape on his 100th birthday\, he leaps out of a window and onto the nearest bus\, kicking off an unexpected journey involving\, among other surprises\, a suitcase stuffed with cash\, some wicked criminals\, and an elephant named Sonya.  Like an unruly Nordic cousin of Forrest Gump\, Allan’s youthful escapades and current adventures weave together into an offbeat treat for anyone who’s young at heart.  Starring beloved comedian Robert Gustafsson\, this fanciful spin on world history is based on a best-selling novel and also the highest-grossing Swedish film of all time. SUMMARY:Beltracchi: The Art of Forgery
DESCRIPTION:May 29\, 30\, 31\, June 5\, 6 and 7 ♦ Scroll down for Times and locations\nFor nearly 40 years\, Wolfgang Beltracchi fooled the international art world and was responsible for the biggest art forgery scandal of the postwar era. An expert in art history\, theory and painting techniques\, he tracked down the gaps in the oeuvres of great artists – Max Ernst\, Fernand Léger\, Heinrich Campendonk\, André Derain and Max Pechstein\, above all – and filled them with his own works. He and his wife Helene would then introduce them to the art world as originals.\nWhat makes these forgeries truly one-of-a-kind is that they are never mere copies of once-existing paintings\, but products of Beltracchi’s imagination\, works “in the style of” famous early 20th-century artists. With his forgeries\, he fooled renowned experts\, curators and art dealers. The auctioneers Sotheby’s and Christie’s were hoodwinked\, just like Hollywood star Steve Martin and other collectors throughout the world.\nIn “Beltracchi – The Art of Forgery”\, Wolfgang and his wife Helene Beltracchi chat openly – and with great wit and charm – about their quixotic adventures in an overheated art world ruled by blind greed\, and in which apparently no one has an answer to the question as to what is an original\, and what is a forgery. SUMMARY:Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem
DESCRIPTION:  \nMay 1\, 2\, 3\, 8\, 9\, 10\, 15\, 16\, 17 ♦ Scroll down for Times and locations\n \nWatch the trailer here \nA fictional film based on real events. In Israel there is neither civil marriage nor civil divorce. Only rabbis can legitimate a marriage or its dissolution. But this dissolution is only possible with full consent from the husband\, who in the end has more power than the judges. Viviane has been applying for divorce (a gett) for three years. But her domineering husband will not agree. His cold intransigence collides with Viviane’s determination to fight for her freedom in this “gripping film from start to finish.” — NY Times \n ♦ The brilliance of Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem is that\, without a shift in tone\, the film begins to seem like a tragedy populated by clowns\, its males clinging to ancient laws to compensate for feebleness of character. — New York Magazine \n ♦ Viviane is at once a fleshed-out character\, a political metaphor\, a shout to heaven and earth. The movie’s title brings to mind all those novels named after their protagonists\, especially women with tribulations (Jane Eyre\, Madame Bovary\, Anna Karenina)\, but the word trial also almost predictably suggests Franz Kafka. SUMMARY:Amour Fou
DESCRIPTION:April 17\, 18\, 19; May 1\, 2\, 3 ♦ Scroll down for times and locations\nWATCH THE TRAILER HERE\nA young and notorious poet in Romantic Era Berlin decides to end it all.  Try though he might\, he is unable to convince his skeptical cousin Marie to join him in a suicide pact — go figure. Along comes Henrietta\, who finds his plan intriguing and agrees to navigate the uncharted journey towards ultimate love. Amour Fou (Wild Love) – inspired by the actual suicide pact in 1811 of Heinrich von Kleist (who wrote “The Mariquis of O”) and Henrietta Vogel – goes against expectations to become a wry and curious critique of dying for love. Directed by Jessica Hausner (Germany; 96 min)\n\n“…An eccentric\, coolly deadpan story of love\, including that of the self.\nA sharp\, light look into the abyss…with finesse and fine timing.\nAmour Fou steals under your skin scene by scene.”\n—Manohla Dargis\, The New York Times\n\n \n**** (four stars!)\n—Time Out New York \n \n**** (four stars!)\n“One of the greatest directors in the world!“\n—RogerEbert.com\n \n“A delightful comedy of errors” \n—Indiewire\n \n“Dryly funny!”\n—New York Post\n \n“Top Ten of the Year. This visionary Russian science fiction film is an adaptation of a book by the Strugatski brothers\, on whose work Tarkovsky’s Stalker was based. Twelve years in the making — six of which were for the actual shooting — Hard To Be A God is hardcore art-house cinema and not for the impatient or squeamish\, but\, if you stick with it\, the images and performances will haunt you long after the screen turns dark. Directed by the late Aleksei German. (2015; 170 min)\n\n♦ Aleksei German’s final masterpiece is choreographed with a Felliniesque social grandeur. –Slant\n♦ Mr. German was just as stubborn in sticking to his personal vision as he was innovative in his storytelling\, and he’s left behind a final opus that is hard to shake.–The NY Times\n♦ A MASTERPIECE.  — The Village Voice\n\n♦ Visionary cinema of truly loopy\, uncompromised grandeur.  –Indiewire\n  \nFri\, March 20\n\nHard To Be A God 6:45 @ IU Woodburn\n\nThe Duke of Burgundy  7:30 @ IU Fine Arts\n  \nSat\, March 21\n\nHard To Be A God 3:00 & 6:45 @ IU Woodburn\nThe Duke of Burgundy  4:00 & 7:30 @ IU Fine Arts\n  \nSun\, March 22\n\nThe Duke of Burgundy  3:00 @ IU Fine Arts\n\nHard To Be A God 6:30 @ Bear’s Place\n\n\nFri\, March 27\n\nHard To Be A God 6:45 @ IU Woodburn\n\nThe Duke of Burgundy  7:30 @ IU Fine Arts\n  \nSat\, March 28\n\nHard To Be A God 3:00 & 6:45 @ IU Woodburn\nThe Duke of Burgundy  4:00 & 7:30 @ IU Fine Arts\n  \nSun\, March 29\n\nThe Duke of Burgundy  7:00 @ Bear’s Place\n\nHard To Be A God 3:00 @ IU Fine Arts

DESCRIPTION:March 13\, 14\, 15\, 20\, 21\, 22\, 27\, 28\, 29  ♦  Scroll down for times and locations\n  \nWATCH THE TRAILER\n  \nBritish filmmaker Peter Strickland follows his eerie Festival hit\, Berberian Sound Studio (which some of you saw here last year)\, with this beguiling melodrama about an amateur butterfly expert whose wayward desires test her lover’s patience. The Duke of Burgundy has been compared to Luis Buñuel’s Belle de Jour and Joseph Losey’s The Servant. (2015; 104 min)\n\n♦ The Duke of Burgundy is a love story\, and also a perversely sincere (and sincerely perverse) labor of love. –The NY Times\n\n♦ I have not seen the film Fifty Shades of Grey but I doubt that it evokes the mystery\, wit\, and eroticism that Peter Strickland’s fable of women in love does. All without nudity\, bad dialogue\, or the requisite wooden acting. -The Boston Globe\n♦ This is one of the most incisive\, penetrating\, and empathetic films ever made about what it truly means to love another person\, audaciously disguised as salacious midnight-movie fare. SUMMARY:Li'l Quinquin / Feb 27
DESCRIPTION:Feb 27\, 28\, March 1\, 6\, 7\, 8\, 13\, 14\, 15  ♦  Scroll down for times and locations\nWATCH THE TRAILER\nA bumbling detective investigates a murder on the outskirts of the English Channel in northern France but he has to contend with a young prankster\, the mischievous Quinquin.  Dubbed an “epic farce” by the New York Film Festival\, Li’l Quinquin has been compared to Twin Peaks and True Detective. But simply speaking\, Li’l Quinquin is “a wonderfully weird and unexpectedly hilarious” (Scott Foundas\, Variety) masterwork from one of the most important contemporary French directors\, Bruno Dumont. (2015; 200 min)\n\n♦ Once it becomes clear that this is no mere murder mystery\, and the bizarre turns into the ludicrous and into the depraved\, Dumont’s analysis of life’s toughest questions (reaching for an understanding of the very essence of evil) as told through the simplest of ways becomes tremendously captivating. And it’s worth noting\, again\, just how laugh-out-loud funny this is. –The Playlist\n♦ MESMERIZING. SUMMARY:Beloved Sisters / Feb 27
DESCRIPTION:Feb 27\, 28\, March 1 6\, 7\, 8  ♦  Scroll down for times and locations\n\nWatch the trailer here\nIn Germany in 1788\, a rebellious poet and two bohemian sisters experience an unforgettable period which will eventually bind them forever.\n\nBeloved Sisters is loosely based on the relationship between the post-Enlightenment writer and philosopher Friedrich Schiller and the sisters Charlotte von Lengefeld (who would become his wife) and Caroline von Beulwitz (his eventual biographer).   (170 min; in German and French w/ subtitles) \n“The result is immersive and intelligent. Graf’s knack for no-nonsense storytelling means that Beloved Sisters seems to fly past. Each detail and observation—whether it’s about the Romantic mindset\, gender roles\, or fame in the pre-celebrity age—is integrated so seamlessly that the movie feels effortless. Which\, of course\, it isn’t; the sort of fleet\, sure-footed filmmaking practiced by Graf takes a great deal of serious smarts.” ♦ The A.V. Club\n“Although there’s nothing sensationalistic about his approach\, [Graf] treats the characters’  bohemianism as a wild\, brave\, and precious thing\, and the lead actors — restrained where it counts and bold where it matters — are a pleasure to watch.” ♦ The Village Voice\n“As lengthy and passionate as a drawn-out kiss\, Beloved Sisters is a beautifully made romantic drama set in 18th century Germany that’s smart\, sensual and emotionally resonant.” ♦ L.A. Times\n“THE BEST NEW MOVIE OUT THIS WEEKEND! There have been several wonderful movies focusing on a ménage à trois—Jules and Jim\, Get Out Your Handkerchiefs\, Y Tu Mamá También—but they’ve all centered on two men sharing the same woman. This gets flipped in Beloved Sisters\, a zippily engrossing eighteenth-century costume drama based on a little known true story. Beautifully shot and acted\, Beloved Sisters both explores the tricky nature of sisterhood and shows us how Charlotte\, Caroline\, and Schiller’s scandalous search for personal freedom in love mirrors the larger search for political freedom during the Enlightenment and French Revolution. Beloved Sisters conjures a time and place in which having a ménage à trois could be\, believe it or not\, a form of idealism.” ♦ Vogue\n\nRyder Films are screened at several venues\, each with its own peculiar charms\, and you can read about them here.\nFri\, Feb 27\n\nLi’l Quinquin 6:45 @ IU Woodburn\n\nBeloved Sisters  7:30 @ IU Fine Arts\n  \n \nSat\, Feb 28\n\nLi’l Quinquin 3:00 & 6:45 @ IU Woodburn\nBeloved Sisters  3:45 & 7:30 @ IU Fine Arts\n \nSun\, March 1\n\nBeloved Sisters  3:00 @ IU Fine Arts & 6:45 at Bear’s Place\n\nLi’l Quinquin 4:00 @ IU Woodburn\n\nFri\, March 6\n\nLi’l Quinquin 6:45 @ IU Woodburn\n\nBeloved Sisters  7:30 @ IU Fine Arts\n  \nSat\, Feb 7\n\nLi’l Quinquin 3:00 & 6:45 @ IU Woodburn\nBeloved Sisters  3:45 & 7:30 @ IU Fine Arts\n  \nSun\, March 8\n\nBeloved Sisters  3:00 @ IU Fine Arts\n\nLi’l Quinquin 6:30 @ Bear’s Place\n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Happy Valley / opens Jan 16
DESCRIPTION:Jan 16\, 17\, 18\, 19\, 23\, 24\, 25\nScroll down for times and locations\n\nNestled in the idyllic area known as Happy Valley lies the town of State College and the home of Penn State University. For over 40 years\, Joe Paterno was the celebrated head coach of the school’s storied football team. Lauded not only for his program’s success on the field\, but also for students’ achievements in the classroom\, Paterno was a revered figure in a town where team loyalty approached nationalistic fervor. Then in November 2011 everything changed. Directed by Amir Bar-Lev\, whose other documentaries include The Tillman Story and My Kid Could Paint That. (98 min)\n\nHappy Valley will divide audiences and create heated discussions. However\, there’s one point that won’t be CONTROVERSIAL: It’s one of the best documentaries of the year. ♦ The Playlist\nThe people on screen in “Happy Valley\,” Amir Bar-Lev’s POWERFUL new documentary\, frequently describe Penn State football as a religion. This is almost not a metaphor. Mr. Bar-Lev’s interview subjects sometimes describe Paterno as a god or a saint. ♦ A.O. Scott\, The New York Times\nMESMERIZING. Happy Valley is a devastating portrait of a community—and\, by extension\, a nation—put under a spell\, even reduced to grateful infantilism\, by the game of football. ♦ The New Yorker\n  \nWATCH THE TRAILER\n  \nRyder Films are screened at several venues\, each with its own peculiar charms\, and you can read about them here.\nFri\, Jan 9\nForce Majeure 7pm @ Fine Arts\nViva La Liberta 7:45 at IU Woodburn\nSat\, Jan 10\nForce Majeure 4pm and 7pm @ Fine Arts\nViva La Liberta 3pm\, 5pm and 7:45 @ IU Woodburn\nSun\, Jan 11\nForce Majeure 4pm & 6:15 @ IU Fine Arts\nViva La Liberta 5pm @ IU Woodburn\nMonday\, Jan 12\nForce Majeure 7pm @ Bear’s Place\nFri\, Jan 16\nHappy Valley 6:45 @ @ IU Fine Arts\nForce Majeure 7:30 @ IU Woodburn\nViva La Liberta 8:30 @ IU Fine Arts\nSat\, Jan 17\nHappy Valley 3pm\, 5pm & 6:45 @ IU Fine Arts\nViva La Liberta 4pm @ IU Woodburn\nForce Majeure 6pm @ IU Woodburn\nSun\, Jan 18\nHappy Valley 3pm\, 5pm @ IU Fine Arts\nViva La Liberta 3:30 @ IU Woodburn\nForce Majeure 5:30 @ IU Woodburn\nMonday\, Jan 19\nHappy Valley 7pm @ Bear’s Place

SUMMARY:Viva La Liberta (Long Live Liberty) / Jan 16\, 17\, 18
DESCRIPTION:Scroll down for more times and locations\nAs the national election approaches\, seasoned politician Enrico Oliveri has plummeted in the polls and his supporters and adversaries alike begin to acknowledge his impending downfall. Unwilling to face the failure of his party and his nation\, Oliveri vanishes into the night\, causing panic within his political inner circle. His top aide and his wife contact his identical twin brother\, Giovanni\, a genius philosopher living in a psychiatric institution. The three of them concoct a dangerous plan and what at first seems like a crazy idea proves to be their only solution. The twin brothers are played by the great Tony Servillo (some of you saw him last year in THE GREAT BEAUTY) \nViva La Liberta opened in New York several weeks ago to less-than-favorable reviews. We think it is much better: a nimble\, shape-shifting political drama sprinkled with sly comic moments.\n\n\n\nThe twin brothers are crafted brilliantly. There’s no wacky costuming or wildly disparate personalities at play\, the twins distinguish themselves in Servillo’s subtle performance(s). They become their own men through little more than differences in facial expressions\, senses of humor\, and moral outlooks.\nServillo is playing two roles in two languages (in Paris he speaks French). He’s so good at it that Ando never feels tempted to actually put the brothers on screen at the same time – one of the easier ways to call cheap attention to a dual role film. Servillo is a master\, and pulls off a great feat once he begins playing not only two identical characters\, but two identical characters that occasionally like to pretend to be each other.\nAs Giovanni begins to succeed in place of his brother\, Enrico is faced with a terrible question: how does he square the fact that his brother may not just be different than him\, but better? The subtext is both sad and cerebral.\n\n\n\nVIVA LA LIBERTA is underwritten by a grant from the Olga Ragusa Fund administered by the IU Department of French and Italian\nWatch the Trailer\n  \nRyder Films are screened at several venues\, each with its own peculiar charms\, and you can read about them here.\n  \nFri\, Jan 16\nHappy Valley 6:45 @ @ IU Fine Arts\nForce Majeure 7:30 @ IU Woodburn\nViva La Liberta 8:30 @ IU Fine Arts\nSat\, Jan 17\nHappy Valley 3pm\, 5pm & 6:45 @ IU Fine Arts\nViva La Liberta 4pm @ IU Woodburn\nForce Majeure 6pm @ IU Woodburn\nSun\, Jan 18\nHappy Valley 3pm\, 5pm @ IU Fine Arts\nViva La Liberta 3:30 @ IU Woodburn\nForce Majeure 5:30 @ IU Woodburn\nMonday\, Jan 19\nHappy Valley 7pm @ Bear’s Place

SUMMARY:Force Majeure / opens January 16\, 17\, 18
DESCRIPTION:Force Majeure is a prickly moral comedy for grown-ups\, full of sharply observed moments\, spectacular scenery and masterfully manipulated atmosphere. This is very much a work of 21st-century global culture\, but also one that draws on the great cinematic tradition of northern Europe\, with hints of Ingmar Bergman\, Eric Rohmer and Michael Haneke.  –Salon\nJAN 16-18  SCROLL DOWN FOR SHOWTIMES ♦ WATCH THE TRAILER HERE\n \nA Swedish family travels to the French Alps to enjoy a few days of skiing and spend some precious time with each other. The sun is shining and the slopes are spectacular but\, during a lunch at a mountainside restaurant\, an avalanche turns everything upside down. With diners fleeing in all directions\, mother Ebba calls for her husband Tomas as she tries to protect their children. Tomas\, meanwhile\, is running for his life. In Swedish\, French\, English and Norwegian with subtitles. (118 min)\n \nBrilliant! – The NY Times\nA brutally smart and original film. —The Playlist\nForce Majeure is an impressive and adult piece of work\, bracing and intelligent. —HitFix\nIt’s the rare kind of moviegoing experience that will haunt you long after you leave the theater and lead to some very awkward conversations with your spouse. —Entertainment Weekly\nBRILLIANT! There’s one very late scene in which—to keep things vague—the family is placed in another potentially dangerous situation. This is both unexpected and white-knuckle thrilling\, and will provide an extra dash of salt to the post-movie dinner conversation Force Majeure is sure to inspire in any couple foolhardy enough to risk seeing it on a date. “What would you do if that happened?” Fanny demands of her semi-serious boyfriend. The younger couple then stays up the rest of the night debating the precise significance of every detail in this purely hypothetical life-or-death scenario. SUMMARY:Point and Shoot / Dec 20\, 21
DESCRIPTION:Dec 20\, 21\nScroll down for times and locations\nMatt Van Dyke\, a timid 26-year-old\, left his home in Baltimore in 2006 and set off on a self-described “crash course in manhood.” He bought a motorcycle and a video camera and began a three-year\, 35\,000-mile motorcycle trip through Northern Africa and the Middle East. While traveling\, he struck up an unlikely friendship with a Libyan hippie\, and when revolution broke out in Libya\, Matt joined his friend in the fight against dictator Muammar Gaddafi.  With a gun in one hand and a camera in the other\, Matt fought in – and filmed – the war until he was captured by Gaddafi forces and held in solitary confinement for six months. Two-time Academy Award nominated documentary filmmaker Marshall Curry tells this harrowing and sometimes humorous story of a young man’s struggle for political revolution and personal transformation. (2014; 83 min)\n\nOutstanding — an essential\, fascinating critique—and product—of our ”look at me” culture. -Entertainment Weekly\n There are remarkable sequences in “Point and Shoot” connected to the Libyan revolution\, in which the insurgents have even less experience in warfare than Van Dyke\, making him the de facto expert on small arms and mayhem. An eloquent critique not just of one man’s compulsions\, but a culture’s. – Indiewire\nWant to know why young men from all over the world have flocked to fight for ISIS? SUMMARY:The Blue Room / Nov 21
DESCRIPTION:Nov 22\, 23\, 29\, 30 Scroll down for times and locations\n\nTwo lovers go from pillow talk to possible murder in this sexy\, brain-teasing French thriller. Mathieu Amalric (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly\, Grand Budapest Hotel) directs and stars as Julien\, a middle-aged salesman embroiled in a steamy love affair with a married woman who\, after a round of kinky sex\, makes a startling suggestion. Suddenly Julien is caught up in a police investigation—but just what exactly happened? Based on a novel by legendary crime writer Georges Simenon\, this beguiling cinematic puzzle unfolds in an elliptical style that keeps the audience guessing every step of the way. (76 min; rated R)\nhttp://trailers.apple.com/trailers/ifcfilms/theblueroom/\nSpellbinding! — LA Times\nWhile cinephiles are aware of Mathieu Amalric’s range as an actor\, he’s displaying an equally fearless and eclectic approach to his filmography as a director. — Indiewire\nA compact and resonant psychological thriller directed by French actor Mathieu Amalric\, who is also its star\, The Blue Room makes a fascinating European companion piece to David Fincher’s Gone Girl.         – Salon\nThere is more than a hint of the old-school Nouvelle Vague in their almost pointillistic approach. (Coincidentally\, one of Picasso’s best known Blue Period paintings was also called “The Blue Room\,” and it fits the spirit of Amalric’s picture rather well.) Yet\, what most distinguishes the film is the degree to which Amalric captures the vibe and essence of Simenon’s non-Maigret hothouse psychological thrillers. Amalric nicely distinguishes himself as a triple threat with “Blue Room.” Brainy and rather steamy at times\, “The Blue Room” belongs in the top rank of Simenon adaptations\, in the company of films from the likes of Chabrol\, Leconte\, and Duvivier. –Epoch Times\nEsther invites Julien to kiss her and — in a glorious\, Hitchcockian swirl of wind\, musical notes and camera movement — he does\, surrendering completely. Mr. Amalric handles the kiss beautifully. With Ms. Cléau (his partner in real life) and a gifted team that includes the cinematographer Christophe Beaucarne\, he makes the moment at once palpably real and manifestly artificial\, counterbalancing the authenticity of the emotions with studiolike lighting and a wind that suddenly blows in as if summoned by unseen forces or an off-screen special-effects fan. It’s the kind of big movie kiss that sends noir heroes to their knees and maybe their graves and that accompanied by crashing ocean waves and intensifying music\, elevates Scottie’s passion for Madeleine in Hitchcock’s Vertigo\, one of Mr. Amalric’s touchstones.                     –The New York Times\n  \nSat & Sun\, Nov 22 & 23\nThe Two Faces of January   3:00\, 5:00 & 7:00 @ IU Fine Arts\nThe Blue Room   3:45\, 5:45 & 7:45 @ IU Woodburn \nSat & Sun\, Nov 29 & 30\nThe Two Faces of January   3:00\, 5:00 & 7:00 @ IU Fine Arts\nThe Blue Room   3:45\, 5:45 & 7:45 @ IU Woodburn – Last Chance!\n\nMon\, Dec 1\nThe Two Faces of January 7pm at Bear’s Place – Last Chance!

SUMMARY:The Two Faces of January / Nov 17
DESCRIPTION:Nov  29\, 30\, Dec 1  Scroll down for times and locations\nA sparkling\, smart thriller written by Patricia Highsmith (Strangers on a Train\, The Talented Mr Ripley). Colette and Chester are two charismatic Americans who are vacationing in Athens in 1952; while sightseeing at the Acropolis they encounter Rydal\, a young\, Greek-speaking American who is working as a tour guide\, scamming tourists on the side. Drawn to Colette’s beauty and impressed by Chester’s wealth and sophistication\, Rydal gladly accepts their invitation to dinner. However\, all is not as it seems and Chester’s affable exterior hides darker secrets. Kirsten Dunst\, Viggo Mortensen and Oscar Isaac star. Adapted for the screen and directed by Hossein Amini (2014; 97 min)\n• A superior directorial debut for a smart\, literate screenwriter delivers both first-class character drama and edge-of-your-seat suspense. – Empire\n• Best known as the screenwriter of such subtext-rich adaptations as “The Wings of the Dove” and “Drive\,” Amini excels at conveying the subtle\, unspoken tensions between characters\, selecting a tightrope-risky example with which to make his directorial debut and orchestrating it with aplomb. – Variety\n• A subtle\, underplayed psychological drama with terrific work by all three actors. –Salon\n• Graced with a superb cast — Mr. Mortensen and Mr. Isaac have the juiciest roles — Mr. Amini adds embellishing details and plot layers\, turns up the sexual heat and smoothly increases the narrative torque. He keeps you guessing about the twists and turns but also about the strange kinks of character\, which are in keeping with Patricia Highsmith’s trademark psychological complexities. –The New York Times\nSat & Sun\, Nov 22 & 23 \nThe Two Faces of January   3:00\, 5:00 & 7:00 @ IU Fine Arts\nThe Blue Room   3:45\, 5:45 & 7:45 @ IU Woodburn \nSat & Sun\, Nov 29 & 30\nThe Two Faces of January   3:00\, 5:00 & 7:00 @ IU Fine Arts\nThe Blue Room   3:45\, 5:45 & 7:45 @ IU Woodburn\nMon\, Dec 1\nThe Two Faces of January 7pm at Bear’s Place – Last Chance!\n

The person assigned to carry out this barbaric act is Wehrmacht commander of Greater Paris\, General Dietrich von Choltitz\, who already has mines planted on the Eiffel Tower\, in the Louvre and Notre-Dame and on the bridges over the Seine. Nothing is to be left as a reminder of the city’s former glory. However\, at dawn on 25 August\, Swedish Consul General Raoul Nordling steals into German headquarters through a secret underground tunnel and thus starts a tension-filled game of cat and mouse as Nordling tries to persuade Choltitz to abandon his plan. \nIn this riveting adaptation of the stage success by Cyril Gély\, the great Volker Schlöndorff (Academy Award winner THE TIN DRUM) has created a psychologically elaborate game of political manners between two highly contrasting characters played by two of France’s greatest stage and screen actors André Dussollier and Niels Arestrup. While Choltitz entrenches himself behind his duty to unquestioningly obey all military orders\, Nordling tries everything he can to appeal to reason and humanity and prevent the senseless destruction of the beloved ‘City of Light.’ \n\nWATCH THE TRAILER \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDiplomacy screens  Oct 31\, Nov 1\, 2\, 7\, 8\, 9\n \nFri\, Oct 31\nDiplomacy 7:45 @ IU Fine Arts\nThe Blue Room 7:00 & 8:30 @ IU Woodburn\nSat & Sun\, Nov 1 & 2\nDiplomacy 4:00\, 6:00\, 7:45 @ IU Fine Arts\nThe Blue Room\n5:00\, 7:00 & 8:30\nMon\, Nov 3\nThe Blue Room 7:00 @ Bear’s Place\nFri\, Nov 7\nThe Blue Room 6:45 @ IU Fine Arts\nThe Two Faces of January 7:30 @ IU Woodburn\nDiplomacy 8:15 @ IU Fine Arts\nSat & Sun Nov 8 & 9\nThe Blue Room 6:45 @ IU Fine Arts\nThe Two Faces of January 5:30\, 7:30 @ IU Woodburn\nDiplomacy 4:45\, 8:15 @ IU Fine Arts\nMon\, Nov 10\nThe Two Faces of January 7:00 @ Bear’s Place\nFri\, Nov 14\nThe Blue Room 6:45 & 8:15 @ IU Fine Arts\nThe Two Faces of January 7:30 @ IU Woodburn\nSat Nov 15\nChildren’s International Film Festival @ IU Fine Arts\nProgram 1 Ages 3-8 – 2:00 & 5:15\nProgram 2 Ages 9-90 – 3:30 & 7:00\nSun Nov 16\nChildren’s International Film Festival @ the Buskirk-Chumley Theater\nProgram 1 Ages 3-8   –   2:00 & 5:15\nProgram 2 Ages 9-90   –   3:30 & 7:00\nMon\, Nov 18\nThe Two Faces of January 7:00 @ Bear’s Place\nFri\, Nov 21\nThe Blue Room 6:45 & 8:15 @ IU Fine Arts\nThe Two Faces of January 7:30 @ IU Woodburn\nSat & Sun\, Nov 22 & 23\nThe Two Faces of January   3:00\, 5:00 & 7:00 @ IU Fine Arts\nThe Blue Room   3:45\, 5:45 & 7:45 @ IU Woodburn \nSat & Sun\, Nov 29 & 30\nThe Two Faces of January   3:00\, 5:00 & 7:00 @ IU Fine Arts\nThe Blue Room   3:45\, 5:45 & 7:45 @ IU Woodburn

DESCRIPTION:View Event \nOct 24\, 25\, 26    Scroll down for times and locations\n\nIn a Paris airport zone\, two strangers try to make sense out of their lives in this unlikely Cinderella story. Josh Charles (The Good Wife) plays an American in Paris attempting to start his life anew in this drama from France’s Pascale Ferran. Anais Demoustier as co-stars a young woman working as a maid in the airport hotel in which Charles is staying. She’s fascinated by the inner lives of the guests\, which in part leads her up to the roof of the hotel one night where something very unexpected happens. French filmmaker Pascale Ferran is best known for her adaptation of D.H. Lawrence’s “Lady Chatterly.” Most of the film is in English although French and Japanese are spoken with subtitles. Also starring Clark Johnson from “The Wire.” (127 min)\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe New York Times\, A.O. Maggie Gyllenhall co-stars as Frank’s musical sidekick; she plays a theremin Although this film is fictional it is loosely inspired by the life of outsider musician Frank Sidebottom. SUMMARY:Fifi Howls From Happiness / Sept 10\, 12\, 13\, 14
DESCRIPTION:Wed\, Sept 10\nFifi Howls from Happiness  7:00 @ The Back Door\n\n\nFri\, Sept 12\nFrank  7:00 @ IU Fine Arts\nFifi Howls from Happiness  7:45 @ IU Woodburn Hall\n\nSat & Sun Sept 13 & 14\nFrank   5:00 & 7:00 @ IU Fine Arts\nFifi Howls from Happiness  5:45 & 7:45 @ IU Woodburn Hall – Last Chance!\n\n  \nMitra Farahani’s lyrical documentary explores the enigma of provocative artist Bahman Mohassess\, the so-called “Persian Picasso\,” whose acclaimed paintings and sculptures dominated pre-revolutionary Iran. Irreverent and uncompromising\, a gay man in a hostile world\, Mohassess had a conflicted relationship with his homeland—revered by elites in the art scene and praised as a national icon\, only to be censored later by an oppressive regime. Known for his iconoclastic art as well as his scathing declarations\, Mohasses abandoned the country over 30 years ago for a simple\, secluded life in Italy.\nWhile the new Iranian government destroyed many of his works\, Mohassess himself obliterated even more– in rage at man’s inhumanity to man\, environmental destruction\, and the futility of idealism. Ranging from tender to playful to haunting to grotesque\, these unforgettable pieces were as mercurial as the man himself\, a chain-smoking recluse with the mouth of a sailor and the soul of a poet\, touched by a mischievous spark and as likely to lapse into a political rant as a burst of eccentric laughter. \nDetermined to interview Mohassess\, fine artist/filmmaker Farahani discovers him living alone in a hotel room in Rome and begins to craft the perfect final biography\, in his own words and on his terms. Along the way\, the inimitable spirit of the man behind the image is laid bare—both painfully sensitive and crudely comical\, “condemned to paint\,” but unable to compel himself to leave anything behind as a legacy. When a pair of artist brothers and ardent fans of Mohassess commission him for an ambitious project\, the elderly man is inspired with a renewed sense of purpose and returns to painting after decades of dormancy. A lasting tribute to an elusive artistic genius\, Fifi Howls from Happiness affirms the power of creative freedom\, the right of the artist to create and to destroy\, and above all\, to have no regrets. \n• Village Voice: Addictively FASCINATING. The lovely ball-&-socket meeting of the two artists’ sensibilities is what makes the doc sing!\n• RogerEbert.com: As if to confirm how crucial timing is to documentaries\, the artist gives the filmmaker a last performance that helps make her portrait of him as EXTRAORDINARY as the man it portrays.\n• Time Out NY: Stunningly multifaceted…surprising and deeply affecting .\n• The NY Times: Thoughtful\, moving…A portrait of the artist as a refusenik\, a recluse\, a survivor and a stubborn question mark\, “Fifi Howls From Happiness” registers\, by turns\, as a celebration\, an excavation and an increasingly urgent rescue mission.\n• The Hollywood Reporter: The most startlingly unexpected Iranian triumph at Telluride was Mitra Farahani’s FIFI HOWLS FROM HAPPINESS\, an unconventional documentary about forgotten Iranian artist Bahman Mohassess. Mohassess\, who died in 2010\, was a fantastic character\, a viciously witty gay guy who cut a stylish swath through Europe and makes wicked fun of his dim-bulb oppressors. In the film\, Farahani\, gorgeous and stylishly feminine\, spars skillfully with the artist\, deftly penetrating his defenses through sheer intelligence and knowledge of his work\, like Truffaut interviewing Hitchcock.\n\n

SUMMARY:Venus in Fur / Sept 8 - Last Chance!
DESCRIPTION:VENUS IN FUR \nVenus in Fur is a sharp\, sexy comedy performed by two superb and superbly in-tune actors. \n–Slate\nA brusque and haughty director in a rundown Paris theater\, after a long day of auditions\, laments that he cannot find an actress with the chops to star in his new play. Just as he is about to leave the theater\, Vanda bursts in\, a whirlwind of erratic – and\, it turns out\, erotic – energy. As the extended “audition” builds momentum\, the balance of power tilts: she becomes the one in charge\, while he’s reduced to a whimpering wreck. Roman Polanski’s mischievous meditation on sex\, gender and desire stars Mathieu Amalric and Emmanuelle Seigner (who cautions that the film is not a veiled portrait of her real-life marriage to the notorious filmmaker). \nVenus in Fur was nominated for 5 Cesars (France’s Oscar) and Polanski won for Best Director. (96 min)\n• Philadelphia Inquirer: Wickedly smart and wickedly playful\, Roman Polanski’s adaptation of David Ives’ Tony-nominated Venus in Fur works on so many levels\, it’s almost dizzying. \n• Los Angeles Times : It is a comic\, cerebral romp for a long time before it hits you with its best shot — some Polanski-worthy darkness.\n• Village Voice: Polanski orchestrates this cat-and-mouse game with devilish delight\, dancing around Ives’s play as if it were a pagan bonfire\, jabbing at it with his figurative pitchfork.\n• The New Yorker: Polanski conjures his most graceful work in years.\n\nMon\, Sept 8\nVenus in Fur 7:00 @ Bear’s Place\n\n  \n  \n  \n
