SUMMARY:Bird People / Oct 24\, 25\, 26
DESCRIPTION:View Event \nOct 24\, 25\, 26    Scroll down for times and locations\n\nIn a Paris airport zone\, two strangers try to make sense out of their lives in this unlikely Cinderella story. Josh Charles (The Good Wife) plays an American in Paris attempting to start his life anew in this drama from France’s Pascale Ferran. Anais Demoustier as co-stars a young woman working as a maid in the airport hotel in which Charles is staying. She’s fascinated by the inner lives of the guests\, which in part leads her up to the roof of the hotel one night where something very unexpected happens. French filmmaker Pascale Ferran is best known for her adaptation of D.H. Lawrence’s “Lady Chatterly.” Most of the film is in English although French and Japanese are spoken with subtitles. Also starring Clark Johnson from “The Wire.” (127 min)\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe New York Times\, A.O. Scott \n\n\nThere are plot twists\, and then there is what Ms. Ferran does here\, which is to transform — impetuously\, improbably and altogether marvelously — this somber\, realistic tale into something else entirely.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe A.V. Club\n\n\nIt’s also just magnificently goofy\, unafraid to court ridicule and confident enough to take captivating detours\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVillage Voice \nFirmly rooted in everyday particulars — primarily the transactions (business\, emotional\, or otherwise) facilitated by the time- and space-obliterating devices to which we are constantly tethered — Ferran’s movie dares to venture\, for much of its second half\, into fantasy.\n\nWATCH THE TRAILER\n\nFri\, Oct 24\n Bird People 6:45 @ IU Woodburn\n Diplomacy 7:30 @ IU Fine Arts\n\n\nSat & Sun\, Oct 25 & 26 – Last Chance!\n Bird People 4:15 & 6:45 @ Woodburn\n Diplomacy 3:30\, 5:30 & 7:30 @ IU Fine Arts\n  \n

SUMMARY:Frank / Sept 26\, 27\, 28
DESCRIPTION:September 26\, 27\, 28   Scroll down for times and locations\nA young wannabe musician finds himself out of his depth when he joins an avant-garde pop band led by an eccentric musical genius who hides himself inside a large\, fake head. Michael Fassbender gives an extraordinary performance as the mysterious\, enigmatic Frank\, who never removes his  mask. Maggie Gyllenhall co-stars as Frank’s musical sidekick; she plays a theremin Although this film is fictional it is loosely inspired by the life of outsider musician Frank Sidebottom. Frank is written by Jon Ronson\,   who played in a band with the real-life Frank. (98 min)\n\n“Strikingly original. A TERRIFIC and SUBLIME EXPERIENCE. Mandatory watching for the adventurous viewer.” – The Playlist\n“Fassbender’s performance is a master class. Surprisingly resonant. A movie that the right people will take to heart; to the people it speaks to\, it speaks volumes.” – Indiewire\n“4 STARS – BEGUILING” – The Guardian\n“WEIRD and WONDERFUL.” – Variety\n“A LOVING and HILARIOUS tribute to outsider music. With on-point parody and gallows humor\, there’s a real sweetness that pokes at the heart of the creative spirit.” – Spin\n“BONKERS and BRILLIANT.” – Time Out\n\nFrank is a genuine original in a summer sea of sameness\, and A DARKLY COMEDIC MANIFESTO against the cultural status quo.  — Wall St Journal\n\n FUNNY\, TOUCHING and VITAL. Director Lenny Abrahamson knows his way around eccentrics and he makes an ideal guide into a bizarro world where music is made on the margins.  –Rolling Stone\nFrank is an accumulation of memorably offbeat moments\, like an album made up of B sides and lost demo tracks that you stumble across and can’t stop replaying.  –A. SUMMARY:Fifi Howls From Happiness / Sept 10\, 12\, 13\, 14
DESCRIPTION:Wed\, Sept 10\nFifi Howls from Happiness  7:00 @ The Back Door\n\n\nFri\, Sept 12\nFrank  7:00 @ IU Fine Arts\nFifi Howls from Happiness  7:45 @ IU Woodburn Hall\n\nSat & Sun Sept 13 & 14\nFrank   5:00 & 7:00 @ IU Fine Arts\nFifi Howls from Happiness  5:45 & 7:45 @ IU Woodburn Hall – Last Chance!\n\n  \nMitra Farahani’s lyrical documentary explores the enigma of provocative artist Bahman Mohassess\, the so-called “Persian Picasso\,” whose acclaimed paintings and sculptures dominated pre-revolutionary Iran. Irreverent and uncompromising\, a gay man in a hostile world\, Mohassess had a conflicted relationship with his homeland—revered by elites in the art scene and praised as a national icon\, only to be censored later by an oppressive regime. Known for his iconoclastic art as well as his scathing declarations\, Mohasses abandoned the country over 30 years ago for a simple\, secluded life in Italy.\nWhile the new Iranian government destroyed many of his works\, Mohassess himself obliterated even more– in rage at man’s inhumanity to man\, environmental destruction\, and the futility of idealism. Ranging from tender to playful to haunting to grotesque\, these unforgettable pieces were as mercurial as the man himself\, a chain-smoking recluse with the mouth of a sailor and the soul of a poet\, touched by a mischievous spark and as likely to lapse into a political rant as a burst of eccentric laughter. \nDetermined to interview Mohassess\, fine artist/filmmaker Farahani discovers him living alone in a hotel room in Rome and begins to craft the perfect final biography\, in his own words and on his terms. Along the way\, the inimitable spirit of the man behind the image is laid bare—both painfully sensitive and crudely comical\, “condemned to paint\,” but unable to compel himself to leave anything behind as a legacy. When a pair of artist brothers and ardent fans of Mohassess commission him for an ambitious project\, the elderly man is inspired with a renewed sense of purpose and returns to painting after decades of dormancy. A lasting tribute to an elusive artistic genius\, Fifi Howls from Happiness affirms the power of creative freedom\, the right of the artist to create and to destroy\, and above all\, to have no regrets. \n• Village Voice: Addictively FASCINATING. The lovely ball-&-socket meeting of the two artists’ sensibilities is what makes the doc sing!\n• RogerEbert.com: As if to confirm how crucial timing is to documentaries\, the artist gives the filmmaker a last performance that helps make her portrait of him as EXTRAORDINARY as the man it portrays.\n• Time Out NY: Stunningly multifaceted…surprising and deeply affecting .\n• The NY Times: Thoughtful\, moving…A portrait of the artist as a refusenik\, a recluse\, a survivor and a stubborn question mark\, “Fifi Howls From Happiness” registers\, by turns\, as a celebration\, an excavation and an increasingly urgent rescue mission.\n• The Hollywood Reporter: The most startlingly unexpected Iranian triumph at Telluride was Mitra Farahani’s FIFI HOWLS FROM HAPPINESS\, an unconventional documentary about forgotten Iranian artist Bahman Mohassess. Mohassess\, who died in 2010\, was a fantastic character\, a viciously witty gay guy who cut a stylish swath through Europe and makes wicked fun of his dim-bulb oppressors. In the film\, Farahani\, gorgeous and stylishly feminine\, spars skillfully with the artist\, deftly penetrating his defenses through sheer intelligence and knowledge of his work\, like Truffaut interviewing Hitchcock.\n\n

SUMMARY:Venus in Fur / Sept 8 - Last Chance!
DESCRIPTION:VENUS IN FUR \nVenus in Fur is a sharp\, sexy comedy performed by two superb and superbly in-tune actors. \n–Slate\nA brusque and haughty director in a rundown Paris theater\, after a long day of auditions\, laments that he cannot find an actress with the chops to star in his new play. Just as he is about to leave the theater\, Vanda bursts in\, a whirlwind of erratic – and\, it turns out\, erotic – energy. As the extended “audition” builds momentum\, the balance of power tilts: she becomes the one in charge\, while he’s reduced to a whimpering wreck. Roman Polanski’s mischievous meditation on sex\, gender and desire stars Mathieu Amalric and Emmanuelle Seigner (who cautions that the film is not a veiled portrait of her real-life marriage to the notorious filmmaker). \nVenus in Fur was nominated for 5 Cesars (France’s Oscar) and Polanski won for Best Director. (96 min)\n• Philadelphia Inquirer: Wickedly smart and wickedly playful\, Roman Polanski’s adaptation of David Ives’ Tony-nominated Venus in Fur works on so many levels\, it’s almost dizzying. \n• Los Angeles Times : It is a comic\, cerebral romp for a long time before it hits you with its best shot — some Polanski-worthy darkness.\n• Village Voice: Polanski orchestrates this cat-and-mouse game with devilish delight\, dancing around Ives’s play as if it were a pagan bonfire\, jabbing at it with his figurative pitchfork.\n• The New Yorker: Polanski conjures his most graceful work in years.\n\nMon\, Sept 8\nVenus in Fur 7:00 @ Bear’s Place\n\n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Empty Hours / Aug 15 & 16
DESCRIPTION:August 5\, 16\,\nOn the isolated coast of Veracruz\, 17 year-old Sebastian takes over running his uncle’s small and cozy rent-by-the hour motel. There he meets Miranda\, a regular customer who comes to the motel to meet a lover who always keeps her waiting. As Sebastian and Miranda get to know each other\, an ambiguous game of seduction begins between them. (101 minutes)\nThis second feature by the Mexican director Aaron Fernandez is a delight. Washed in the colors of surf and sand\, and moving to the languid rhythms of swaying palm trees\, The Empty Hours is a vacation from the noise and bombast of the summer blockbuster. This is a film that’s less about sex than about how it feels in life’s spaces\, when we’re simply waiting — for a lover to arrive\, an uncle to return or the summer to be over. Sebastian and Miranda are killing time\, but so softly that watching a beetle transport a bottle top over a tile floor feels as riveting as any car chase. –The New York Times\n  \nFri\, August 15\nA Coffee in Berlin 6:45 @ IU Fine Arts\nIda 7:45 @ IU Woodburn\nThe Empty Hours 8:15 @ IU Fine Arts  \nSat\, August 16\nIda 3:45\, 5:30 & 7:15 @ IU Woodburn\nA Coffee in Berlin 4:45 & 6:30 @ IU Fine Arts\nThe Empty Hours 8:15 @ IU Fine Arts – Last Chance!\n\nSun\, August 17\nIda 3:45\, 5:30 & 7:15 @ IU Woodburn\nA Coffee in Berlin 4:45 & 6:30 @ IU Fine Arts\nMon\, August 18\nA Coffee in Berlin 7:00 @ Bear’s Place (Films at Bear’s are moving to Monday nights)\n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:A Summer's Tale / Aug 8\, 9\, 10
DESCRIPTION:MAGICAL! — Los Angeles Times\nJuly 18 – August 3 French filmmaker Eric Rohmer’s 1995 romantic comedy has never been released in the States – until now. And it shows the legendary writer/director at his effervescent best…. Gaspard a recent university graduate\, arrives at the seaside in Bretagne for a three week vacation before starting a new job. He’s hoping his sort-of girlfriend\, the fickle Lena\, will join him there; but as the days pass\, he welcomes the interest of Margot\, a student of ethnology working as a waitress for the summer.\nWhether it’s the closest you’ll get to the beach this year\, or you have to tear yourself away from the dunes to enjoy it\, it’s an essential part of any movie-lover’s summer. –The Wrap\n  \nFri\, August 8\nA Coffee in Berlin 6:45 @ IU Fine Arts\nThe Empty Hours 7:45 @ IU Woodburn\nA Summer Tale 8:15 @ IU Fine Arts\nSat\, August 9\nThe Empty Hours 3:45 & 5:45 @ IU Woodburn\nA Coffee in Berlin 4:45 & 6:30 @ IU Fine Arts\nA Summer Tale 7:45 @ IU Woodburn\nSun\, August 10\nA Summer’s Tale 3:30 @ IU Woodburn – Last Chance!\nA Coffee in Berlin 4:00 @ IU Fine Arts\nThe Empty Hours 7:00 at Bear’s Place\n  \nMon\, August 11\nA Coffee in Berlin 7:00 @ Bear’s Place  (Films at Bear’s are moving to Monday nights)\n \nFri\, August 15\nA Coffee in Berlin 6:45 @ IU Fine Arts\nIda 7:45 @ IU Woodburn\nThe Empty Hours 8:15 @ IU Fine Arts  \nSat\, August 16\nIda 3:45\, 5:30 & 7:15 @ IU Woodburn\nA Coffee in Berlin 4:45 & 6:30 @ IU Fine Arts\nThe Empty Hours 8:15 @ IU Fine Arts – Last Chance!\n\nSun\, August 17\nIda 3:45\, 5:30 & 7:15 @ IU Woodburn\nA Coffee in Berlin 4:45 & 6:30 @ IU Fine Arts\nMon\, August 18\nA Coffee in Berlin 7:00 @ Bear’s Place (Films at Bear’s are moving to Monday nights)\n  \n  \n  \nA Summer’s Tale feels like a great beach read of a movie. The Rohmer touch consists of nonchalance and effortless sensuality\, not just in the people\, but also in the landscape\, somehow even in the air. –The Village Voice\nThe thoughts may not be profound\, but they are profoundly true to life\,and the writer-director’s approach to young people’s concerns is remarkably universal and timeless. –Variety\nA Summer’s Tale has room to focus on Rohmer’s brilliance at revealing human nature through articulate\, multidimensional characters\, perfectly cast\, who in some ways seem to exist outside of time. –NY Times\nEric Rohmer has a genius for taking a seemingly mundane situation and slowly tightening the \n screws… Think of it as a thriller by Hitchcock–a Rohmer favorite—only with words\, not knives\, that \n cut straight to the heart.”\n –Time Out New York\nThe sunniest and funniest of Rohmer’s seasonal tales…wonderfully witty…Rohmer provides insights aplenty into matters of love\, friendship\, fidelity\, loneliness\, luck\, destiny and desire.\n –Variety\n

SUMMARY:MANAKAMANA / July 11\, 12\, 13
DESCRIPTION:July  11\, 12\, 13 \nIn central Nepal\, tiny cable cars travel up and down the breathtaking mountain landscape\, transporting pilgrims to the ancient Manakamana temple. The cable-car line linking a mountain village in Nepal with the isolated seventeenth-century temple of the title\, devoted to the Hindu goddess Bhagwati\, is both the subject and the sole location of this serenely revelatory documentary. Stephanie Spray and Pacho Velez filmed 11 different cable car journeys in full\, each lasting nearly ten minutes (the same length as the rolls of super 16mm film on which they shoot). A miracle of nonfiction cinema casting\, Spray and Velez’s carefully configured movie delivers captivating characters\, one after another. With a hypnotic rhythm\, this memorable work of slow cinema allows us to closely observe compelling faces and bodies responding to the camera\, conveying everything from boredom to amusement to astonishment. (117 min)\nCritic’s Pick!- The New York Times\nYou could hardly ask for a more beautiful vision of souls in transit. – Time Out\, New York\nRadiates incredible compassion and insight. Produced by the directors of last year’s brilliant documentary\, Leviathan\, Manakamana couldn’t be more different\, utilizing a similarly uncompromising approach but one that’s far more contemplative and lovely. If Leviathan showed us the primal terror of everyday life\, this new film is a warm hug\, a salute to our shared humanity.\n–Paste\n  \nWed\, July 9\nWe Are The Best! 7:00 at The Back Door \nFri\, July 11\nIda 6:45 @ IU Fine Arts\nWe Are The Best! 7:30 @ IU Woodburn\nManakamana 8:15 @ IU Fine Arts\nSat\, July 12\nIda 5:00 & 6:45 @ IU Fine Arts\nWe Are The Best! 5:30 & 7:30 @ IU Woodburn\nManakamana 8:15 @ IU Fine Arts\nSun\, July 13\nManakamana 3:00 @ IU Fine Arts – Last Chance!\nIda 3:45 @ IU Woodburn\nWe Are The Best! 7:00 @ Bear’s Place\nWed\, July 16\nIda 7:00 @ The Back Door\nFri\, July 18\nIda 6:45 @ IU Fine Arts\nA Summer Place 7:30 @ IU Woodburn\nWe Are The Best! 8:15 @ IU Fine Arts\nSat\, July 19\nIda 5:00 & 6:45 @ IU Fine Arts\nA Summer Place 4:30 & 7:30 @ IU Woodburn\nWe Are The Best! 8:15 @ IU Fine Arts\n

He also happens to be the Minister of Foreign Affairs for the land of enlightenment: France. With his silver mane and tanned\, athletic body\, he stalks the world stage\, from the floor of the United Nations in New York to the powder keg of Oubanga. There\, he calls on the powerful and invokes the mighty to bring peace\, to calm the trigger-happy\, and to cement his aura of Nobel Peace Prize winner-in-waiting. Alexandre Taillard de Vorms is a force to be reckoned with\, waging his own war backed up by the holy trinity of diplomatic concepts: legitimacy\, lucidity and efficacy. He takes on American neo-cons\, corrupt Russians and money-grabbing Chinese. Perhaps the world doesn’t deserve France’s magnanimousness\, but his art would be wasted if just restricted to home turf. Enter the young Arthur Vlaminck\, graduate of the elite National School of Administration\, who is hired as head of “language” at the foreign ministry. In other words\, he is to write the minister’s speeches. But he also has to learn to deal with the sensibilities of the boss and his entourage\, and find his way between the private secretary and the special advisers who stalk the corridors of the Quai d’Orsay – the ministry’s home – where stress\, ambition and dirty dealing are the daily currency. But just as he thinks he can influence the fate of the world\, everything seems threatened by the inertia of the technocrats. Co-starring Julie Gayet – the actress has been in the news in recent months because of her relationship with real-life French President François Hollande. (113 min)\nThis is not life imitating art. SUMMARY:COLD IN JULY / June 11\, 13\, 14\, 15
DESCRIPTION:June 11\, 13\, 14\, 15  \nThe spirits of 1980s genre maestros like John Carpenter\, Walter Hill and William Lustig hover strongly over Jim Mickle’s Cold in July\, a smart\, compellingly nuanced piece of Texas pulp fiction that was a hit at this year’s Sundance Festival. Michael C. Hall\, Sam Shepard and an exuberant Don Johnson star.  Mickle (Stake Land\, We Are What We Are) continues to show that he’s among the most distinctive genre filmmakers on the indie scene and a noble upholder of a bygone B-movie tradition. (109 min)\n UNFORGETTABLE! Jim Mickle is the new John Carpenter\, and if you’re into that kind of thing and haven’t heard about him\, you soon will. SUMMARY:LE WEEK-END / June 4\, 6\, 7 & 8
DESCRIPTION:NY Times Critics’ Pick\nA long-married British couple\, revisit Paris for the first time since their honeymoon in an attempt to rekindle their relationship. Jim Broadbent and Lindsay Duncan star in this witty\, magically buoyant romantic comedy. Diffident\, wistful Nick (Broadbent) and demanding\, take-charge Meg (Duncan) careen from harmony to disharmony to resignation and back again as they take stock and grapple with love\, loss\, regret and\, disappointment\, in their own very English way. When Meg and Nick run into their insufferably successful old friend Morgan\, an amusingly boorish American academic with a fancy Parisian address played with pure delight by Jeff Goldblum\, their squabbles rise to a register that’s both emotionally rich and very funny. Le Week-End is written by Hanif Kureishi (My Beautiful Laundrette) and directed by Roger Michell (Notting Hill).  (93 min)\n They are two intelligent\, sophisticated people searching for the spicy condiment they need to keep their relationship fresh during a bittersweet weekend in Paris\, and\, like the film that frames them\, they are smart\, substantial and enchanting. –The New York Obser\n\nWed\, June 4\n\nLe Weekend 7:00 at the Back Door\n\nFriday\, June 6\nCold in July 6:30\nThe French Minister 7:15 @ IU Fine Arts\nLe Weekend 8:30 @ IU Woodburn\nSat and Sun\, June 7 & 8 – Last Chance!\nThe French Minister 4:45 & 7:15 @ IU Fine Arts\nLe Weekend 4:00 & 8:30 @ IU Woodburn\nCold in July 6:30 @ IU Woodburn\n  \n

SUMMARY:Sweet Dreams / May 28\, 30\, 31\, June 1
DESCRIPTION:Sweet Dreams is co-sponsored by The Lotus World Music and Arts Festival and by The Chocolate Moose.\nAll Things Considered aired a feature recently on SWEET DREAMS and you can listen to it here\n\nNY Times Critics’ Pick!\n \nPowerful sounds pierce the silence of the Rwandan countryside. Curious children gawk outside the gate. This is something new in Rwanda—a group of women\, 60 strong\, pounding out rhythms of power and joy. \nTwenty years ago Rwanda suffered a devastating genocide. Close to a million people were killed by neighbors\, friends\, even family. The country has made great strides in economic recovery\, but “people are not like roads and buildings” says Kiki Katese\, pioneering Rwandan theater director. “How do we rebuild a human being?” \nKiki decided to start Ingoma Nshya\, Rwanda’s first and only women’s drumming troupe\, open to women from both sides of the conflict. There was only one requirement: to leave the categories of the past at the gate. For the women—orphans\, widows\, wives and children of perpetrators—the group has been a place to begin to live again\, to build new relationships\, to heal the wounds of the past. Yet the struggle to survive and provide for their families still persists. \nSo when Kiki came up with the idea to open Rwanda’s first and only ice cream shop\, the women were intrigued … What was ice cream exactly and how would they do it? Kiki invited Jennie and Alexis of Brooklyn’s Blue Marble Ice Cream to come to Rwanda to help the drummers open their shop\, which they aptly named Inzozi Nziza (Sweet Dreams). Sweet Dreams follows this remarkable group of Rwandan women as they emerge from the devastation of the genocide to create a new future for themselves. \n“Because of our history\, people know how to fight against\, but not for\,” Kiki says. “We want to change that equation.”  (89 min) \n \nThese women all have\, as most Rwandans do\, a direct connection to the genocide. They are orphans because of it\, widows because of it\, even the daughters of parents imprisoned for taking part in it. The only thing the troupe demands as an entrance requirement is that participants leave the past behind while they are performing and watching the infectious enthusiasm these women project allows us to experience the resilience\, the capacity for happiness they retain in spite of all they’ve been through.  –Los Angeles Times\nWednesday\, May 28\nSweet Dreams 7:00 @ The Back Door\n\nFriday\, May 30\nSweet Dreams 6:30 @ IU Fine Arts\nLe Weekend 7:30 @ IU Woodburn\nCold in July 8:15 @ IU Fine Arts\n \nSat and Sun\, May 31 & June 1\nSweet Dreams 5:00 & 6:30 @ IU Fine Arts\nLe Weekend 5:30 & 7:30 @ IU Woodburn\nCold in July 8:15 @ IU Fine Arts

SUMMARY:NYMPHOMANIAC / May 21- Last Chance!
DESCRIPTION: Last Chance to See Nymphomaniac Vol I – Wed at 7pm at the Back Door\n  \nNymphomaniac is a remarkably eccentric sex epic that is OFTEN BRILLIANT and never simple-minded or dull. – The New Yorker      \n A self-diagnosed nymphomaniac recounts the erotic adventures of her life and her journey of self-discovery. Charlotte Gainsbourg\, Christian Slater\, Shia LaBeouf\,  Stellan Skarsgard\, Uma Thurman and Willem Dafoe star in Lars von Trier’s two-part epic about gender roles\, authoritarianism\, religion\, obsessive behavior\, and lust. Danish filmmaker/provocateur Lars von Triers is perhaps best known for Dancer in the Dark\, which starred Bjork and won the Palme d’Or at Cannes. Nymphomaniac: Volume I and Volume II mark Lars von Trier’s follow-up to his critically acclaimed film\, Melancholia. As widely reported\, the films contain graphic depictions of sexuality to a degree unprecedented in a mainstream feature film. \n“American studios\,” Von Triers says\, “give money to directors to educate them away from their creative fingerprint\, even if that’s the reason they wanted them in the first place. I’ve avoided that fate. You have to fight the urge to do a big action movie. You avoid Batman.” \nVolume 1 is 118 min; Volume II 124 min\nAn intellectual high-wire act\, death-defying\, dangerous\, entertaining\, and delighting in its own inventiveness and daring.  – RogerEbert.com\nIf it weren’t for the explicit sexual encounters\, this could be an Ibsen or a Strindberg play. –Chicago Tribune\nHANG ON TO YOUR SEAT BACK\, your Bible\, or the hand of a friend. Nymphomaniac ravishes the brain and leaves you begging for more. –The Guardian\nWHO NEEDS 50 SHADES OF GREY WHEN YOU’VE GOT LARS VON TRIER? A provocative\, nuanced and even empathetic account of one woman’s attempts to understand and perhaps reconcile the factors that are bound up in sex. IT’S THE WORK OF A FLAMBOYANT SALESMAN AND A MAJOR ARTIST.”  –Film Journal International\nIT’S IMPOSSIBLE TO TURN AWAY! –Manohla Dargis\, The New York Times\n  \n  \n

–Manohla Dargis\, The New York Times\n \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:No God\, No Master / April 25 & 26
DESCRIPTION:April 11 – April 26 When a series of package bombs show up on the doorsteps of prominent politicians and businessmen in the summer of 1919\, U.S. Bureau of Investigation Agent William Flynn (David Strathairn) is assigned the task of finding those responsible. He becomes immersed in an investigation that uncovers an anarchist plot to destroy democracy. Based on true events of the 20s the film sets the stage for a timely drama with resoundingly similar parallels to the contemporary war on terrorism and the role government plays to defeat it.  (94 min)\n\n\nFilmmaker Terry Green says: The disintegration of civil liberties during times of social unrest is nothing new in America. I set out to make a film about the Sacco and Vanzetti saga\, the anarchist movement they belonged to\, and the cause they dedicated their lives to advancing. Like all stories that need to be understood at the mythic level\, this is a part of a nation’s history that should inform the present era and future of the country. Post-World War I was a volatile period in America. The fear of Communism was sweeping the nation. The government began arresting anyone they suspected of being a radical and it didn’t take much to get on their list. This film is a tribute to those who have stood tall for human rights in the face of adversity.\nApril 25 and 26\nRedwood Highway 6:30 @ IU Woodburn\nAftermath 7:00 @ IU Fine Arts\nNo God No Master 8:15 @ IU Woodburn

(Benicheti’s refusal to let his film be screened in anything other than CinemaScope and stereo meant most art houses couldn’t accommodate it.) Nearly lost to the annals of cinema\, the film was rescued after the director’s 2011 death. Cousin Jules made its U.S. debut at the 2012 New York Film Festival\, almost 40 years after it was made. An almost wordless\, wholly observational account of the daily lives of the director’s cousin Jules and his wife Felice\, French farmers living alone in rural Burgandy. Cousin Jules is a time capsule; although it does not exactly burst with mainstream potential\, patient and observant moviegoers will be transported by this long-lost gem. (France; 1973\, 2013; 91 min) Playdates: March 21\, 22\, 23\, 28\, 29;  April 4\, 5\, 6\n \nThe Playlist:  A masterpiece…Cousin Jules has finally been found and is receiving its due.\nThe Hollywood Reporter:  For the patient viewer\, particularly one seeking respite from the modern world\, this day-in-a-life may be an almost spiritual experience.\n Time Out New York: For 91 minutes\, the pleasure of the Guiteauxes’ company is ours.
